Bitcoin Price Surges To $1800 Record High

Bitcoin: It doesn’t look like this, because it is a virtual currency.

{Worth|Benefit} of digital concurrency {is constantly on the|continually|continue to be} rise.

The digital concurrency, Bitcoin, has broken {information|data|documents} again, eclipsing the $1700 record it had already broken just days {previously|before} {to stay|to be in} at a new all time high price of over $1800. The new record price means that Bitcoin has increased its value by 85% overall in the first 5 months of 2017 alone. Since May {you|one particular}, {the marketplace|industry|the industry} capitalization of Bitcoin has risen over $3 billion to $29. 53 billion.

Bitcoin, another month, another record: But {So why|How come|For what reason}?

{This is a|What a} great question, {if you're|most likely|you aren't} burning down today. Very well, there are {a great deal|a whole lot} of reasons, but {We|I actually|My spouse and i} have a limited {quantity of|volume of|range of} words to play with, therefore, the primary reason for the latest {leap|bounce|hop} in breaking records is the fact that Bitcoin is gaining legitimacy as an actual legitimate {foreign currency|money|forex} around the globe. {Asia|Nippon} has recently legalized the concurrency, {rendering it|so that it is} the best form of payment locally. Around 260, 000 stores there are expected to {commence|get started} accepting Bitcoin as payment in the {approaching|returning} months. {It might|It may|It could possibly} also see itself {being a|learning to be a|to become} default safe currency for international businesses and travelers alike.

And there are distinct grumblings of positivist from other major policy makers {around the globe|throughout the world}, as well. Russia has said it is considering the adoption of Bitcoin, though not exclusively, and there are moves in the US and {European countries|The european countries|The european union} to do the same. The trend isn't {common|general|widespread} however. China for {example|occasion|illustration}, {made|has turned} recent moves to restrict its use there. Other currencies such as Lite coin, Reuther, and Ripple are booming in value as well.

{Is usually|Is definitely|Can be} it a bubble?

{Most likely|Almost certainly|Likely}. Maybe. Maybe not, who knows. But that's another brilliant question; go you for being so {amazing|outstanding|extraordinary} today. In {conditions} {to be|penalized} an actual currency, Bitcoin isn't all that big. $30 billion is a relatively small amount. (such, really relatively. ) {Yet|Nevertheless|Although} that hasn't stopped the international media from {obtaining|collecting|getting} on its rise, and spreading the hype. {Foreign currency|Money|Forex} speculators are currently {getting|strolling} on the Bitcoin popularity, of course, if {reviews are|information are|studies are} to be {thought|assumed|presumed}, are paying far in excess of {the person|the consumer|the} Bitcoin value, betting that the currency will only {surge|climb|go up}, {and so} creating an unsustainable bubble of trouble. {With|Including} some point, Bitcoin's value is inevitably going to crash. It has before, and it will again. There has never recently been a currency in modern times, whose value at some point, hasn't. {Therefore|Thus|And so} it will. That much is certain. But {which|that is|gowns} kind of besides the point. Bitcoin will {endure|make it through}, {and can|and may|and definitely will} continue to {develop|increase|expand} in the long term, and currencies are heading to be part every day life for {almost all of} us, at some point in the future. {In|For|By} the moment however, Bitcoin looks like it's heading to keep on {increasing|growing} in value, in the short term anyway.

Hacked? Microsoft Says Blame The Government

Government agencies criticized over malware stash.
{Can|May} Wanna Cry attack have been avoided?

There's a code among white {head wear|cap|do not lik} hackers and cyber security experts alike, whether they're professionals on Google's {Task|Job} Zero team or {only a|simply a} guy with some {information|ingenuity|skills} working out of his basement: when {you find|you will find} a bug, you contact the software developer and give them a chance to make it right. {Task|Job} Zero's established guidelines specifically state that they will {take a seat on|lay on} the information until the manufacturer {confronts|effects} a patch, lest any bad guys want to {take advantage of|make use of|use} it. If ninety {times|days and nights} has passed and the developer has yet to come up with a solution, only then will the researchers inform {the general public|people|the population} so they can at least take preventive action. Wouldn't it be nice if everybody was so ethical when it comes to security flaws and hacking? Wouldn't it be even nicer if the government wasn't sitting on information concerning bugs in order to exploit it for their own purposes, sometimes for years?

A New Boost To Adobe Creative Cloud

Adobe Creative Cloud
{Among the|One of many} mainstays in any visual artist's toolbox is the Adobe family of products. But where artists, designers, and other professionals once had {to buy|to get|to acquire} individual software titles (and then {wish|desire|expect} they didn't upgrade their hardware {and also have|and possess|and still have} to buy it all over again), Adobe has streamlined the process through its subscription-based offering, Adobe Creative Cloud.

In Adobe Capture, {you will|likely to|you are going to} be able to {get|pick up} images from your mobile device and manipulate them for use in your Photoshop work sphere without the process of getting the image off your phone, storing it to your computer, and then trying to work with it.
Speaking of mobile, Sketch has {an entire|a complete} new tool set for creating with your i phone or iPad, {particularly if|particularly when|especially when} {you require|you will need|you may need} to fine tune those brushes or use {levels|tiers}.

Windows 10 Updates Hello Night Mode

The next Windows 10 update looks like it might be getting a new ‘night mode’ and it’s probably about time.

As anyone who’s ever used any versions of Windows from the current no 10 version all the way back to the early 90s and Windows 3.1, the color of Windows, is, well, blue.
But blue light has long been touted as something that disrupts human sleep patterns. Ok, so yes, the argument about quite why you’d keep your computer screen on, and running beside your bed when you’re trying to sleep is a valid one. I mean, why would you do that?
OK, so maybe nobody does actually do that. But there is a market for 3rd party software that changes the white balance of your computer screen toward the red part of the spectrum gradually over the course of the night, such as f.lix, which is free for Windows and Mac users. (For some reason we don’t seem to have it on File hippo.com yet: I’ll look into that and get it sorted)
But anyway, Microsoft have looked into it, and while on the whole, there doesn’t seem to be that many significant changes coming in the next update from the Redmond based tech firm, some Windows Insiders have seen the light encoded deep within the Beta version of Windows 10.

UC Browser For Windows: Like Chrome, With Extras

UC Browser is and has been a standout among st the most well known versatile programs for Android for many years now and has accumulated a notoriety for being a quick and dependable program.

In any case, the Chromium based program is likewise accessible for Windows, and on the off chance that anything, it's superior to anything its littler fronted enormous sibling, and an unmistakable contender for anybody searching for a swap for Chrome on their PC.

The most ideal approach to consider UC Browser for Windows is this: Google Chrome, yet better.

No, truly, it is.

The download is under 50 megabytes in size, the blue squirrel introduce symbol is consoling, and it's up and running in beside no time.

Clients of Chrome or Firefox will likewise feel at home quickly at home, and practically all your standard recognizable Chrome expansions can be introduced straight from the Chrome Web Store.

It looks decent too, and has smooth no simple to utilize catches that stay out of your way when perusing and don't obstruct the screen or get in your direction.

UC Browser likewise accompanies some extremely decent additional components as standard. The Video/MP3 Grabber is a clever minimal additional that enables you to download any MP3 or online video with once click, and enables you to decide the video quality. Remember obviously, you should comply with whatever copyright laws exist in your specific topographical area before downloading anything.
Simple yet elegant and no-nonsense UI
Obviously, on the off chance that you would prefer not to download online recordings, you can simply watch them rather and the Pop-Out-Video choice gives you a chance to watch while getting on with other stuff which I sort of consider as important nowadays.

The inherent Ad Blocker is additionally extremely welcome, yet whether you need to have this on or not, is obviously, your decision. Heaps of sites nowadays won't let you approach them on the off chance that you touch base with a promotion blocker turned on, however UC's seems to be very viable.

The thing I like about UC Browser for Windows the best however, is the night mode. Blue light innovation was a major thing at the current CES, and UC are doing their bit to help us work around evening time. Basically, night mode naturally diminishes the screen contingent upon the season of day, and makes it less demanding on your poor tired eyes.

UC likewise has some in the background increasing speed elements, for example, interface per-stacking when the mouse drifts over a connection, and next page reloading so it will open instantly when you tap on it. Cloud Boost however is the place it's at, compacting pictures as they download so transmission capacity is diminished, yet with just the scarcest, scarcely unnoticeable disintegration in mages; ideal for constrained associations and those with information tops.
Fully custom settings without the associated bloat of most other browsers
UC additionally accompanies a superior than most Smart download administrator, enabling you to continue downloads if your association is lost, or you kill your portable PC on or.

In the event that you as of now utilize UC Browser on another gadget, then you can likewise adjust your history, bookmarks and inclinations and so forth., between whatever you utilize UC on.

Last contemplation

In this, taking everything into account, UC Browser is a brilliant fascinating decision for anybody searching for a program that is smooth, simple to utilize, and that resembles Chrome, however better. Clients in India just (boo!) additionally find the opportunity to week by week prizes on account of UC Super Day. Whatever remains of us however should placate ourselves with the way that we're utilizing a quick and fun program.

Goodness, and obviously, it's totally free, and as usual, you can get it ideal here from File Hippo.com.

Imaging Software Detects Cancer With Human Accuracy

Imaging Software Detects Cancer With Human Accuracy
Examine by Stanford University could be a distinct advantage in skin malignancy identification.

The medicinal business confronts a ghastly problem. It's not quite recently the regularly expanding costs, deterrents counteracting access to quality care, and absence of patient mindfulness, either. Again and again, issues that could have been treated with a superior achievement rate and lower taken a toll rather raise towards mortality – and close chapter 11 – if not tended to sufficiently early.

One arrangement has been the mechanical advancement that makes early location more moderate and less tedious. Recall the development of the "at home" pregnancy test, for instance. It dispensed with the need to make a medical checkup to affirm, and before its far reaching advertising, ladies were guided not to try and make that arrangement until they were as much as three months along. Presently, with modest tests that can distinguish pregnancies that involve days along, ladies are better ready to assume responsibility of their pre-birth mind and can expect more beneficial results.

One energizing new development by scientists at Stanford University stands to be a distinct advantage in skin malignancy location. This product, which can actually be stacked onto a cell phone and utilize the telephone's camera, can recognize skin growths with around an indistinguishable precision from the human specialist working it. While both the specialist and the product would even now need to depend on a biopsy for an authoritative analysis, this new apparatus could conceivably put the energy of per-screening into more hands, and also do ponders for those instances of "we should simply watch this mole and report any progressions."

As indicated by a report from Stanford News, "We understood it was plausible, not simply to accomplish something admirably, but rather and in addition a human dermatologist," said Sebastian Th run, a subordinate teacher in the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. "That is the point at which our reasoning changed. That is the point at which we stated, 'Look, this is not only a class extend for understudies, this is a chance to accomplish something extraordinary for humankind."

In a comparable system as facial acknowledgment or voice acknowledgment programming being "prepared" using a plenty of tests, the product was bolstered pictures of upwards of 130,000 diverse skin tests. Along these lines, it figured out how to choose injuries that look suspicious and in this manner show the requirement for further testing.

That is some cool programming as is this – look at the most recent variants of the best programming, appropriate here on File Hippo.

Top Reasons Your PC is Slow

Top Reasons Your PC is Slow

Top Reasons Your PC is Slow

No matter what you use your PC for, you want to be able to get things done in a timely manner. There is nothing more annoying than trying to be productive when your PC is running slow enough that turtles finish before you do. Trying to be patient with a slow PC is often a practice in futility, especially when all you want is to speed up your computer and get on with what you were doing. The good news is that the cause of your slow PC can be identified, and steps can be taken to resolve your slow PC issue.
Why Your PC is Slow
Defrauding
When did you last fragment your computer? This is one of the simplest steps you can take to speed up your PC. While newer operating systems often have a built in def ragging program, this task can easily be accomplished via the control panel on your PC. De fragmenting consolidates your files and frees up memory space so your computer will run more efficiently.
Leaking Memory
Leaking memory occurs when a program consumes RAM but is unable to release RAM back to your PC. Increased paging file usage, or hard disk thrashing, causes your computer to slow down substantially. You can fix this problem by specifying RAM management rules. Simply change the allowable amount of memory the leaking application can consume and your PC should speed up.
Increase Memory
Check your PC’s amount of available RAM. If you are running low, it might be time to increase the memory by installing additional RAM. Few PCs come with more than the minimum amount of RAM needed for the computer. Most users do not notice this until they begin using the computer and have taken up memory space. Only those who rarely use their PCs will never notice a change in RAM. Once you have installed additional memory, you might be surprised at how much faster your PC runs.
Browser Toolbars
If you do a lot of web browsing and downloading, odds are that, over time, some of your downloads have automatically included toolbars such as those from Yahoo, Sing, Google, Homeopaths, and others. Try disabling or removing these toolbars. They are not necessary unless you really use them all the time, and the problem might not be that your PC itself is slow, but that these browser add-nos are slowing down your internet browsing sessions. This goes for any browser add-on really. You can quickly speed up browsing by removing the ones you do not need.
Other Things You Can Do to Speed Up Your PC
  • Check your hard disk space. If you are running low, it is time to remove files, fragment or consider additional or external storage.
  • Scan your computer for viruses, spyware, and adware. A good anti-virus program will scan and remove any problems detected, speeding up your PC.
A slow PC does not mean it is time to toss it out and buy a new one. Often, a slow PC is simply a sign that it is time for maintenance or component upgrades.

Fake News Spreads To Law Enforcement Agencies
faux data Spreads To direction Enforcement enterprises

The surge of false news has achieved scourge extents, such a great amount all together that various online networking sites are taking movement. when restricted to simply parody sites – and a few locales whose parody wasn't really witty adequate to be analyzed as parody – the range of artificial news sites has now fallen into classes: individuals who spread unconfirmed scheme idea degree posts, and those that intentionally scatter 1/2-truths and through and through falsehoods.

be that as it may, there's another branch of the artificial news claim family tree that is exacting basically as a decent arrangement issue, in substantial part in light of the fact that the inspiration at the back of it isn't yet perfect. fake online networking pages taking on the appearance of open administration outlets have sprung up, a large portion of them sharing altogether false "news" stories of nearby violations. while there's no lack of people that make fake data for the a chuckle of it, agents believe the point in this illustration can be to motivate perusers to take after the pages and tap on the abnormal data stories to have the capacity to phish or unfurl malware.

In each article, the address of the killings ended up noticeably changed to mirror that purview. One page, the farce of the Mohegan Police branch, keeps on being dynamic paying little mind to having no news articles on it (clients can see the incorrect spelling of "branch" inside the fake page); the option parodied pages have at some point or another been evacuated by fb after various audits of them being artificial pages. In each case, real pix were stolen from the certified office pages and duplicated to the caricature pages.

As far again as 2012, fb recognized there were more prominent than eighty million false pages or profiles on its site page; with numbers that way, the enterprise can't bring every one of them down in a convenient manner.

Indeed, even without the threat of tricks or malware, some other open door utilizing the presentation of those sites may moreover have a more political inclination. Microsoft Confirms Windows 10 Is The End Of The Line

Microsoft Confirms Windows 10 Is The End Of The Line

Microsoft Confirms Windows 10 Is The End Of The Line

Sorry Windows fans, it looks like we’re all going to have to come to grips with the fact the Windows 10 is the end of line and there will be no Microsoft 11. The iconic operating system is installed on over 90% of computers world-wide, but it was confirmed at the Microsoft Ignite conference in Chicago this month when Jerry Nixon stated that Windows 10 is the “last version.”
Instead of releasing a brand new version of its desktop OS every few years, Microsoft is taking a page out of Apple’s playbook as the company shifts focus to providing continuous updates to their software. Windows will become more of a service than something you have to go purchase at the store in order to upgrade. For the first time in Microsoft’s history, Windows 10 will be available as a free upgrade this July for any current Windows 7 and up users. After upgrading to Windows 10, users will then be able to download regular updates from Microsoft and other sources.
Views regarding software and updates have changed exponentially over the last few years, and it has everything to do with the rise of smartphones and tablets, hence Windows announcement and shift in how it wants to operate – at least regarding Windows. We’ve grown accustomed to having apps updated frequently and rapidly. Waiting years for a company to tweak something just doesn’t fly anymore and Microsoft CEO Katya Adelina knows this.
At Satay Esplanades Microsoft, it’s time to leave the past behind and start taking a cloud-first mobile-first approach. Windows will employ a strategy to split up core components and deliver faster updates, similar to how a mobile operating system works. So, while Windows 10 may be the “end of line” it certainly doesn’t mean Microsoft is throwing in the towel. It just means they’re making a proactive move to stay in the game, stay competitive, and join us in the 21st century.
It’s also rumored that after the launch of Windows 10, Microsoft will soon be ready to release it’s next update, code named Red stone. The fact that there will be no Windows 11 isn’t as big of a letdown knowing this, now is it?

Facebook To Recruit 3,000 New Staff To Review Content

Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, talking on stage earlier this year.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg announces intention is to hire 3,000 extra members of staff to review content.

The increase comes on top of the 4,500 employees Facebook already has to review content broadcast or posted that could be judged as being in violation of the company’s community standards. In the post on his Facebook profile page written earlier this week, Zuckerberg also said the company is to develop new tools to manage the millions of content reports it receives by users every month.
“If we’re going to build a safe community, we need to respond quickly,” Zuckerberg said. “We’re working to make these videos easier to report so we can take the right action sooner — whether that’s responding quickly when someone needs help or taking a post down.”

Against the rules, but up to users to report…

Videos and posts that feature hate speech, crime, racism, self harm, or glorify violence are against Facebook’s rules. The company has recently started using Artificial Intelligence algorithmic software to identify child abuse content and previously banned images. But in most cases, questionable content is currently only reviewed and removed if users report it.
“We’re going to make it simpler to report problems to us, faster for our reviewers to determine which posts violate our standards and easier for them to contact law enforcement if someone needs help,” Zuckerberg also wrote.

Just another drop in a virtual reality ocean?

The social media giant has come in for substantial criticism in the last few weeks for allegedly not responding quickly enough to homicides broadcast live on its service. Zuckerberg’s announcement has been met generally by the media as a positive move, if only as a first step in the right direction for the company to regulate and police itself more effectively.
Facebook currently has around 1.86 billion active monthly users. The real question is whether 7,500 people reviewing content is anywhere near enough, or if it’s a token gesture on behalf of Facebook’s bottom line.
Time will tell.

Google Docs Phishing Scam Revealed

Google was quick to shut down the offending accounts.

Beware the email bearing Google Docs.

The internet has been a-buzz with reports of a new phishing attack that masquerades as a Google Doc. Relying on either addresses you don’t know or hacked contacts from your email address book, the messages invited others to click open a shared Google Doc, but was actually intended to install a virus.
Emailed phishing attacks containing viruses are nothing new, of course. In the past, would-be hackers have relied on macro-based attacks coming through as Word doc attachments, then moved on to hyperlinks once word began to spread about the attachments. Lately, the macro attacks have begun to see a resurgence as a younger generation of tech user (ones who were never told not to open unexpected attachments) started to shy away from clicking links in emails.

Google HR and Ubisoft

This round of attacks seemed to have originated from Google HR offering the recipient a job, to Ubisoft reaching out to gamers with information. Other tweets throughout the day yesterday mentioned journalists specifically as the potential target, which speaks to some of the emails apparently originating from “sources” that pretended to have information to disclose. Basically, any means of getting the recipient to click on the email and then on the bogus document link were deployed.

Accounts shut down

Fortunately, of all the methods for sending out a worm that hackers could have tried, they had to mess with Google. For its part, Google shut down the offending accounts and had stopped the worm’s spread within an hour. All that you did if you fell for it was unleash the worm on your contacts list, but that doesn’t mean you should laugh it off and forget about it. It’s still a good idea to change your Google account password, which is really something you should be doing on a regular basis anyway. The company itself has stated that there’s really no need for further security action, but that it’s a good idea to run a Google Security Checkup against any apps you use that rely on your Google account.

Uber Facing Criminal Investigation By US Government

Greyball,’ was allegedly used by Uber to identify local jurisdiction officials posing as passengers.

Move follows alleged intentional use of ‘Greyball’ software to evade authorities.

The US. Department of Justice has seemingly begun a criminal investigation into Uber, and its alleged use of a software tool called ‘Greyball’ that helped its ‘drivers’ evade local transportation regulators, in places where it had not yet been licensed to operate.
‘Greyball,’ was allegedly used to identify local jurisdiction officials posing as passengers, and then not pick them up, so they were unable to prove Uber drivers were operating illegally. The company have now been ordered under subpoena from a Grand Jury hearing in North Carolina to hand over documents relating to the use of its ‘Greyball’ Software. The nature of any federal criminal violation and the potential for anyone at Uber itself being charged is, as yet, unclear.

Busted

But that said, Uber was forced to admit in March, following a report by the New York Times, that ‘Greyball’ existed. At that time, the tech company also admitted, that they had used the software to identify and circumvent government officials who were trying to prove that Uber drivers were working. And all this happened, allegedly,  with the full knowledge of Uber management. The New York Times investigation claimed that Uber have used Greyball all around the world. However, the DOJ and most subsequent reporting has centered around  areas such as Portland, Oregon. Uber stated that ‘Greyball’ had not been used there however, since April of 2015, when it received permission to operate in the area. Like that somehow makes it all OK…

Uber defence

Uber have claimed that they use/used Greyball primarily to prevent fraud and protect drivers from harm, a company blog post said, and sort legitimate passengers from bogus ones. Which begs the question, why did they stop using it when they were approved to work in an area? Transportation officials in Portland said last week that Uber had used Greyball to evade 16 Portland Bureau of Transportation officials, in December of 2014, consequently denying them dozens of rides before Uber was authorized to operate there in early 2015.

Hack Costs South Korean Yapizon Bitcoin Exchange $5 Million

he Yapizon home page on May 3rd, 2017. Google Translate will do the job if you’d like to read it in English.
Little-known bitcoin exchange suffered huge losses and ‘Fei’ token compensation offer outraged customers. Yapizon, a cryptocurrency exchange based in South Korea was forced to admit last week, that an unknown hacker or group of hackers had been able to compromise its systems and steal over 3,800 bitcoin, currently valued at around $5 million. Yapizon have said the theft has accounted for roughly 37% of the company’s total assets.
In a humbling, yet lengthy statement, posted to its website landing page, Yapizon informed its investors and users that hackers had successfully managed to hijack four separate digital wallets in the small hours of April 22nd.

All Yapizon bitcoin holders to take the hit

Yapizon’s response to the hacks has been to spread its losses equally among all its bitcoin accounts, to apparent outrage from those users who were not affected by the security breach.
Every Bitcoin account or, wallet, on the Yapizon exchange will have the same proportional amount deducted from its balance to cover the losses. The company will then issue ‘Fei’ tokens to each affected user that will over a period of time be bought back by Yapizon using company profits.
In the long term, that should mean that no-one will lose out. In the short term however, users will suffer their balances being reduced by around 37%, the same approximate amount as was stolen, to compensate the hacked wallets.

The Bitfinex legacy

Yapizon’s token ‘token’ effort is not the first of its kind. The Bitfinex exchange in Hong Kong lost $72,000,000 in a major hack last year. To recover their users lost funds, the exchange used a similar program to recover their bitcoin investors funds. The company has since then, been gradually buying the Bitfinex tokens back to reimburse investors losses.

Back to Yapizon

Yapizon can take some credit for the fact that so far, it seems that only their bitcoin depositories appear to have been affected. Information such as names, addresses, ID logins, passwords credit card details and emails have seemingly not been affected. Yapizon have said that that data is stored on separate servers and is fully encrypted. But then why steal someone’s identity when you can steal millions of dollars in untraceable currency. I’m just saying.
At the beginning of April this year officials from Bitfinex said the company had raised enough funds to reimburse all members impacted by the cyberattack. The Yapizon exchange is still offline as of the time of writing, while its engineers rebuild a more secure system.

Gmail To Include Phishing Warning

Move in response to 50% increase in global ransomware

Android devices to warn users of potential attacks.

Following the events of the past week involving a high-speed worm that traveled the net as a Google Doc, the company has a new announcement for its users. Gmail for Android will now have a warning feature that lets users know about the potential for a phishing attack coming through as one of the messages.
Unfortunately, the new feature wouldn’t have prevented anyone from opening the Google Doc scam last week, as that one traveled by rooting out victims’ contacts lists and appearing to come from them. The recipients, believing one of their contacts had just shared a document with them, were all too quick to click on the button and invite the worm in.

Sheer volume of spa

Just because the new phishing warning wouldn’t have stopped this one incident, that doesn’t mean it’s not a really useful tool given the sheer volume of spammy emails that invade email inboxes every day, all of which could potentially contain malicious content. The new feature is built around Google’s existing safeguard that protects users from websites that have harmful code; if users click on an emailed link – a common method of forcing a virus download – that is suspected of being malicious in some way, a popup warning will inform the user of the suspected findings.

Old but successful

While new methods of cybercrime crop up practically every day, the success rate of the “old school” methods like Word-based macros that contain viruses and harmful links in emails and messages means they’re not going away anytime soon. The recent Verizon data breach report proves it: there was a 50% increase in global ransomware attacks last year over the previous year, and the most common method of installation is through phishing attacks.

Oculus Film Studio Shuts Down

Oculus will focus on partnering for gaming, film, and non-gaming VR.

Oculus to focus on partnering for gaming, film, and non-gaming VR.

Facebook and Oculus are closing the doors on their virtual reality-specific film studio, Story Studio, despite its track record of producing award winning short films. The goal is to channel those resources into providing technology for others who are already working the VR space rather than produce original content.
Instead, Oculus will focus on being a major partner for gaming and film, and more importantly, allocating a high multi-million dollar amount of money for “artists making ‘non-gaming’ experiential VR.”
In a statement about the decision, Jason Rubin, Oculus’s vice president of content, said, “We’re going to carve out $50m from that financial commitment to exclusively fund non-gaming, experiential VR content. This money will go directly to artists to help jumpstart the most innovative and groundbreaking VR ideas.”
Facebook acquired Oculus in 2014, investing heavily in both the tech and the software side of things while keeping all of the company’s employees in the program. Now, with the shift away from original content, Facebook has agreed to offer any extraneous personnel a position elsewhere within Oculus or their holdings, or allow them to look for VR work elsewhere.
While some are speculating about the coincidental timing of the closure – coming on the the heels of an executive leaving and the loss of one highly expensive lawsuit – this is not the first time a major player in tech has decided to step away from the creation of competing products (in this case, content) in order to shift focus. Apple has only recently re-entered the self-driving car sphere, for example, after initially stepping away to focus on developing the software that other companies could then license.
Of course, Oculus isn’t out. The $250 million budget speaks to new innovation and a better overall experience, one that other companies are already lining up to use.

Snake Malware Now Targets Macs

Repackaged old viruses seem to be threatening Apple security.

New twist on an old malware has been detected by Fox-IT International.

For years, Mac users have lived in the blissful comfort of a virus-free bubble, happily choosing their Recuperation-based tech over the constant barrage of malicious software that targets Windows machines almost daily. Unfortunately, thanks to recent innovations in being a bad guy, the numbers of attacks against Apple devices and systems has been on the rise.
A new twist on an old malware has been detected by Fox-IT International on Macs, for example. Snake Malware, which has infected Windows devices for almost ten years under the names Tubular and Burros, was recently ported to Macs while hiding in a Flash player installer.
According to an in-depth report by Malware Bytes, “The malware was found in a file named Install Adobe Flash Player.app.zip. The app inside the .zip file would appear to be a legit Adobe Flash Player installer. The app is signed, however, by a certificate issued to an ‘Addy Symonds’ rather than Adobe, but the average user is never going to know that… as long as it’s signed, Apple’s Gatekeeper system will allow it, when set to its default settings.
“If the app is opened, it will immediately ask for an admin user password, which is typical behavior for a real Flash installer. If such a password is provided, the behavior continues to be consistent with the real thing.”
While it’s still newsworthy when a new infection strikes an Apple product, it’s becoming more and more common. The recent news surrounding the OSX/Dok malware that was spread through a good old-fashioned phishing email highlights the fact that users might be too accustomed to their Mac safety blankets. The report from just last month that Little Flocker is back under an ugly new name may also show, however, that new threats might not be as easy to come by; it could be far easier to repackage an old infection rather than attempt to bypass Apple’s security with a new threat.

China To Launch Own Version Of Wikipedia In 2018

The current Wikipedia page about China

Online version of national encyclopaedia to be Wikipedia competitor.

Known as the “Chinese Encyclopedia,” the country’s national encyclopedia was first published in book form in 1993. The new online edition will go live for the first time in 2018 and will be the largest and most comprehensive version so far in the series.
The Chinese Encyclopedia will however, not be open to editing by the army of volunteers that currently add and edit articles like they do on Wikipedia. Instead, Chinese officials have said that the articles will be written by a team of scholars and experts from universities and research institutes. More than 20,000 people have allegedly been hired to work on the project, and the Chinese encyclopedia will feature some 300,000 articles, each about 1,000 words in length.

At over 720 million users, China has the world’s largest internet user base, but it also has some of the world’s most restrictive internet laws. Content on Wikipedia is routinely blocked by China’s Great Firewall, a highly sophisticated system that blocks content critical of the ruling Chinese Communist party.

“The Chinese Encyclopedia is not a book, but a Great Wall of culture,” said Yang Muzhi, the editor-in-chief of the Chinese Encyclopedia, in April. He went on to say that China was under pressure internationally to commit to producing an online encyclopedia that would “guide and lead the public and society”.
Chinese internet companies like Qihoo 360 and Baidu currently have their own online encyclopedias, but are small in comparison to Wikipedia. China is also not the first country to create a rival to Wikipedia. In 2014, Russia also announced plans for an alternative version of Wikipedia, with the stated aim of providing better information about the country than was available on the platform, but which has been criticized for its pro Putin stance and revisionist view of history.
